Early decision and early action: what it means for your essays

Applying early moves your essay deadlines up by weeks, and it raises the stakes for the essays you send to that one school. Here's how to plan.

The basics

• Early decision (ED) is binding: if you're admitted, you commit to attend. You can apply ED to only one school.
• Early action (EA) is not binding. You hear back early but don't have to commit.
• Restrictive or single-choice early action is non-binding but limits where else you can apply early. Rules vary by school.
• Many early deadlines fall in early to mid-November, and some schools offer a second, later round of ED. Always check each school's own dates.

What changes for your essays

• Your Common App essay has to be finished first. It goes to your early school as well as every school after it, so it needs to be done well before the early deadline.
• The “Why us” essay matters more. An ED application tells the school it's your first choice, and your supplement should make that case with specifics. See how to write the “Why this college” essay.
• Don't let the rest slide. Students often pour everything into the early application and then rush the regular-decision essays. Draft at least a few of those before you hear back.

A simple timeline

1. Summer to early fall: brainstorm and draft the Common App essay.
2. Early fall: finish the Common App essay and draft the early school's supplements.
3. Before the early deadline: polish and submit, then start the regular-decision supplements.
4. December: if you're deferred or denied, revise and finish the remaining applications. If you're admitted ED, withdraw your other applications as required.
