Regular decision essays: a plan for November through January

Once early applications are in, many seniors face a second, bigger wave: a supplement or two for every school on the regular decision list. With a plan, it's very manageable.

Start with an inventory

List every regular decision school, its deadline, and every essay and short-answer question it asks, with word limits. Many regular deadlines fall in early January, but some are earlier and some later, and the University of California's Personal Insight Questions are due November 30. Check each college's own page.

Group the prompts before you write

Supplements repeat themselves more than they seem to. Sort them into families:

  • “Why us?” These need fresh research for every school. See how to write the “Why this college” essay.
  • Community and identity. One strong set of ideas can be adapted, carefully, for several schools.
  • Intellectual interest or “why this major.” Often adaptable, as long as each version names something specific at that school.
  • Short answers and lists. Small, but read closely. Don't leave them for the last night.

Adapting is fine. Copying and pasting a school's name into another school's essay is not, and readers notice.

Revisit the Common App essay, once

If an early decision or early action application went out in November, the Common App essay was probably finished in a hurry. Before regular decision, read it once more with fresh eyes. Fix what genuinely isn't working, then leave it alone. Endless polishing rarely helps.

A realistic timeline

  1. Early to mid-November: inventory, grouping, and research for each “Why us.”
  2. Mid-November to mid-December: draft the supplements, starting with the school you care about most or the earliest deadline.
  3. Mid-December: revise; check every essay against its prompt and word limit.
  4. Before the holidays: submit what you can. Last-minute January submissions are where mistakes happen.

If early news arrives in December

An early acceptance may mean withdrawing other applications. A deferral or denial means the regular list matters more, so keep working on it until you know. Planning for both outcomes now makes December much calmer.

Questions families ask

When are regular decision deadlines?

Many fall in early January, but dates vary, and the University of California's Personal Insight Questions are due November 30. Check each college's own page.

Can I reuse supplemental essays?

You can adapt ideas between similar prompts, but “Why us” essays need specific research for each school. Never reuse an essay that names another college.

Should I rewrite my Common App essay after early decision?

Read it once more with fresh eyes and fix what isn't working. Endless polishing rarely helps.
